Portland Cello Project tem nome auto-explicativo, assim como seu belo álbum de estréia, The Thao & Justin Power Sessions, lançado em junho passado. Esta orquestra de violoncelistas, apesar da idéia não ser nova, faz música de qualidade e tem seu eclético repertório a música contemporânea de Arvo Pärt, OutKast, Villa Lobos, Mirah, Dandy Warhols... são alguns dos nomes que foram alvo de recriações pelo projeto. E claro, o título de seu álbum é alusivo às sessões de gravação com a participação dos músicos Thao Nguyen e Justin Power. Uma beleza!

Thom Yorke com nova banda... ??????

Thom Yorke montou uma banda nova (ainda sem nome), a principio para algumas apresentações com músicas de seu álbum solo The Eraser e algumas canções novas e mais o que vier... A banda é formada por Thom Yorke, Joey Waronker, Mauro Refosco, Flea e Nigel Godrich.

As primeiras apresentações foram marcadas para os dias 4 e 5 de outubro no Orpheum Theatre em Los Angeles. Eles ainda não têm um nome e parece que vão durar muito pouco tempo como banda.

at the beginning of october the 4th and 5th we are going to do a couple of shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
we don't really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz ..well ...we haven't got that much material yet!

Cidadão Instigado - Uhuuu! (2009)

O esperado terceiro álbum do Cidadão Instigado foi lançado no início de setembro. Produzido pela própria banda, Uhuuu! traz um som orgânico e mais parecido com o tocado nos shows e marca o primeiro registro em disco com a formação pós-Método Túfo de Experiências.

What happens when a band of resolute perfectionists make their most accessible and upbeat rock album -- a departure so startling, you almost want to call it "their pop album"? When Early Day Miners loosen up, it's almost a different band. The complex layers and atmospherics are still there, but front-and-center on The Treatment are insistent basslines and straightforward melodies on multiple organs and guitars. One of the poppiest here, "So Slowly", manages to combine a buoyant Cure bassline, a wah-wah solo worthy of Robert Fripp, and yet still conveys the lazy drift of summer. You can even hear an echo of "Sympathy for the Devil" on the album's centerpiece "How to Fall".

Behind the scenes, this album features significant changes in personnel. Vocalist / guitarist / lyricist Daniel Burton and bassist Jonathan Richardson have drafted John Dawson on guitar and Marty Sprowles on drums. Whereas previous albums leaned towards sprawling explorations, The Treatment resolutely ditches the slide guitar in favor of overlapping layers of loops, tight motorik rhythms, and guitar and bass processed to resemble cello or brass.

Why The Treatment? To a certain extent, because this is Early Day Miners' most-produced record to date -- and partly because there's a greater engagement with individual, human concerns. Arriving as a fully formed talent, Burton has developed his lyrical themes slowly over the past decade -- exploring the neglected regions of America, and the forgotten chapters of its history on previous albums. In some respects their most personal, subjective, and emotional album, The Treatment starts like every pop album should, with an invitation to join the band in enjoying The Treatment : "we're going out tonight / won't you join us?" but subtle clues reveal its questioning voices are not so straightforward. So listen close -- this is an album whose every layer demands attention, and re-pays it.

Foi lançado o primeiro vídeo oficial do álbum Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy, tributo à Mark Mulcahy (das bandas Miracle Legion e Polaris), previsto para ser lançado em 29 de setembro de 2009, com contribuições de grandes artistas como Thom Yorke, The National, Dinosaur Jr., Michael Stipe, Juliana Hatfield, Mercury Rev, Frank Black... Mais do que ser um tributo, o álbum também servirá como um benefício para Mulcahy cuja mulher morreu recentemente, deixando tri-gêmeas recém-nascidas.

Thom Yorke (Radiohead) fez esta cover arrasadora da canção "All For The Best" que, originalmente vem de Surprise Surprise Surprise, álbum de 1987 do Miracle Legion, num arranjo de pinceladas electronic que, ainda conta com vocais de apoio de seu irmão, Andy Yorke.

Volcano Choir is an assembly of Wisconsinites Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek. You might find these old friends also frequenting records and stages under different monikers, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver. The collaboration predates the meteoric rise of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver project, with original songwriting dating back to the summer of 2005, right around the time the Bees first toured with Vernon's previous band DeYarmond Edison.

While entirely a studio record, the collection doesn't suffer from the overburdens of a digital pile up or over-thinking. Rather it breathes and convulses in equal measure, radiating an inherent dynamism found only in the voluntary bondage of intimacy. With influences ranging from David Sylvian and Steve Reich to Mahalia Jackson and Tom Waits, it might be more accurate to say the group's influence is music itself. You can hear it in the care and real love generously applied to each moment of Unmap. With the vibe of some intimate backwoods gospel, plus a spirit of patience and thoughtful repetition, the music of Volcano Choir is as dynamic as it is lovely.

Unmap ultimately came together over a weekend in November 2008 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, at Justin and Nate Vernon's recording studio. And while it is at its heart a record about the allure of being with people you need and making something with them, it is also a document created by musicians with rare gifts getting together to exorcise their ideas about beauty. This scaffolding of loops and off grid tempos for choral style vocals offers a state of continual surprise, call it unexpectation.

Unmap marks the debut full-length from Volcano Choir, the collaboration between Collections of Colonies of Bees and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.

They are loosely under the Thom Yorke name this time, although these days its all getting kind of blurry.
FeelingPulledApartbyHorses is written & played by Jonny and I and is a radical rework of an old tune thats been kicking around without a home since 2001? i think.
The Hollow Earth is a bass menace that was born out of the Eraser period but needed a little more time.
Both were produced by Nigel Godrich as ever. And mastered by Bob Ludwig.
They are being put out on 12" with sliced sleeve by Stanley and Tchock.
My sources tell me this will be available from the 21st of September if you're interested.. On sale in the w.a.s.t.e part of our website (with a gratis download.)
Or you can go buy it in a good record shop if you are lucky enough to have one near you.
Then later on there will be like a normal download thing i think around the 6th of Oct through the usual channels.

Grand Archives lança novo álbum: Keep in Mind Frankenstein

A Grand Archives, banda de indie rock de Seattle formada por Mat Brooke, Curtis Hall, Jeff Montano e Thomas Wright, está lançando seu segundo álbum, Keep in Mind Frankenstein foi produzido por Ben Kersten, assim como o debut da banda, The Grand Archives, lançado em 2008, ambos via Sub Pop. Keep in Mind Frankenstein traz vários elementos aparentemente díspares mas, que resultam numa incrível unidade. Abaixo, dois bons exemplos disso.

RELEASE:

Grand Archives’ second full-length album, like much of its predecessor, was crafted at Paradise Sound in Index, WA with help from producer Ben Kersten (who also recorded The Grand Archives, the band’s 2008 debut). A few friends dropped by during recording. Brooke’s former Carissa’s Wierd cohorts, Jenn Ghetto and Sera Cahoone, sang backing vocals. The gorgeous streaks of pedal steel across the wistful sweep of “Oslo Novelist” come courtesy of Jason Kardong. For the most part, Grand Archives played everything. Especially the weird bits. It’s a little darker than the first record and opens with the bittersweet elegy “Topsy’s Revenge,” inspired by the infamous 1903 newsreel footage of Thomas Edison electrocuting a rogue Coney Island elephant. Songs like “Dig That Crazy Grave,” a buoyant ditty redolent of Southern California and summer afternoons, and the insistent, soaring Silver Among the Gold find their place here as well. It’s an album made up of disparate elements artfully fit together and brought to life with affecting results: Keep in Mind Frankenstein.
