Steeple is the first album proper from Wolf People and represents the emergence of a fully fledged band from the fragmented, haunted bedroom meanderings of their Tidings singles compilation, released earlier this year. Recorded in a converted chicken barn on the grounds of a 17th century Welsh mansion, Steeple takes on a heavier sound while maintaining the arabesque electric guitars, groove-laden drums and ethereal vocals that characterized its predecessor.

Cheerfully aware of the English rock band cliché of "getting it together in the country," the quartet did it anyway, inspired by the rural isolation of West Wales to conjure shifting rhythms, entrancing folksong and smoke-fogged, riff-stoked jams. From the stuttered, flute-led earworm hook of "Tiny Circle" to the churning, twisted ball of metal that is "One By One From Dorney Reach," Steeple sounds as massive as the setting in which it was laid to tape and is full of the nuggets that many a rock fan spend lifetimes among crates in search of.

Steeple captures a band in metamorphosis, bridging frontman Jack Sharp's earlier solo efforts and the speaker-shearing attack developed in concert over the past four years. Now an accomplished live unit, the quartet have shared stages with the likes of The Besnard Lakes, Dinosaur Jr, Dungen, Endless Boogie, Lightning Dust and Tinariwen.

While the bulk of recording took place in Wales, the remainder was undertaken during post-day job, late night sessions in Sharp's bedroom studio. The results are both more coherent and nuanced than previous outings, with Sharp's keen ear for a tune complemented by heady instrumental passages that veer between dreamlike traditional melodies and feedback onslaughts.

Proud of their heritage, both musical and cultural, Wolf People's vision faithfully reflects the myriad environments the group's members move between -- the British countryside and various cities (Bedford, London and North Yorkshire) -- while offering a universally appreciable set of songs for this age or any other.

The debut album from S. Carey, All We Grow, is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver from the very beginning, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show.

All We Grow is a convergence of Carey's Waltz For Debby-era Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies, and traditional rock band experience, taking leads from Mark Hollis' Talk Talk. It also retests the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich. In his downtime on tour with Bon Iver, Sean would spend time pining for his soul-mate's arms, and in that context, dreaming and composing. During infrequent tour breaks at home he would patiently record these pieces, adding layers each time. Two years later, the parts converged to make an album.

For as much room to breathe as Carey allows his compositions, there are incredibly dynamic moments of bombast held right next to moments of subtle depth and texture. Engineered by Jaime Hansen and Brian Joseph, intermittently at home and at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio outside Eau Claire), All We Grow is an all-encompassing headphone experience as intimate as chamber music and as ambitious as a symphony.

While many are familiar with the cabin mythology of Bon Iver, the story behind Sean joining the band is equally kismet. After hearing through mutual friends that Justin was looking to put together a band, he spent two weeks in his bedroom listening to For Emma, Forever Ago on Myspace, dissecting and learning the drum and vocal parts so well that Justin invited him to join the band upon Sean's approach.

All We Grow is a classic album born without expectation and met with adoration - a cathartic result of Carey's extraordinary and vibrant life experiences that resonates loss, dreams and heart in a manner so instantly relatable, you feel as though you can touch it.

Menomena's Danny Seim on the new album: It's been three-and-a-half years since the release of our last album. Roughly two of those years were spent touring and working on the music contained on Mines, and the rest was spent continuing to work on the new music and on arguing over it. On one hand, it seems like forever. On the other hand...well no, it still seems like forever. Nothing holds up a process like an indispensable band member being both a perfectionist and a control freak. Especially when your band features three of these types. And we certainly haven't gotten any more agreeable in our old age — quite the opposite.

However, in the wake of brutal disagreements, unrelenting grudges and failed marriages (not to mention a world full of modern terrorism, natural disasters and economic collapse) somehow this band is still standing. Mines was constructed the same way we've always made music: We jammed and recorded hundreds of loops spontaneously, using the same ol' trusty software program Brent wrote as a college assignment back in the day. We individually pieced the resulting loops together like jigsaw puzzles, adding in voices and sentimentality. We made big strides building skeletal song structures, and did a decent job collaborating as the ideas began to take shape. But just when a song became familiar to one of us, the other two members broke it apart again, breaking each others' hearts along the way. We rerecorded, rebuilt, and ultimately resented each other. And believe it or not, we're all proud of the results.

I should have started this thing off with a catchy headline. Something like, "Mines will blow off your limbs like an Italian VS-50!" or, "Get ready to strike gold in the mineral-rich soil of Mines!" But again, I can't speak too smugly here. So then, Mines. Land mines, ore mines, plural possessive "mines"? All of the above, I guess... But mostly the latter. I'm just realizing now that I've already illustrated the possessive by choosing to write this myself.

As usual, the end somehow justifies the means. It's done, and it's the best record we could make at this time in our lives. Thank you for listening.

Menomena have released their fourth full-length record, mines. Danny Seim, Justin Harris, and Brent Knopf perform, sing, arrange, and create Menomena songs. On stage, Danny usually plays drums and sings. Justin usually plays bass, saxophone, MOOG, electric guitar, and sings. Brent usually plays keyboards, bells, guitar, and sings.

APANHADOR SÓ (2010)

Laboratório de invenções, a banda porto-alegrense Apanhador Só chega para desvendar os segredos da transmutação. Assim como faz com a sucata que serve de percussão, o quarteto encontra maneiras incomuns para usar estilos e gêneros – reinventados a ponto de eventuais influências se tornarem irreconhecíveis.

Preste atenção em “Balão-de-vira-mundo“, que ao invés de seguir de volta ao sertão nordestino de seus antepassados, vai mais ao sul e vira tango. Ou no coro de “Vila do ½ Dia“, que mostra como o barroco Clube da Esquina pode combinar com o frescor da Praia do Cassino.

Conhecida do público, “Maria Augusta” retorna com novos arranjos, mais sofisticados. Uma das faixas do EP Embrulho Pra Levar, de 2006, é hit (talvez o maior, até agora) da Apanhador Só e conquista por sua construção: uma letra-refrão com quadrinha capaz de passar entre gerações (“Se por acaso tu disser que não me quer/Eu vou correndo arranjar outra mulher”).

“Maria Augusta“, aliás, não está sozinha ao propor a sensação de antiga trova popular ou de sabedoria ancestral. Isso é o mais surpreendente: a Apanhador Só coalhou o primeiro álbum com outras tantas reflexões valiosas. Alguns exemplos: “Um rei me disse que quem deixa ir tem pra sempre” (“Um Rei e o Zé“); “Não é o prédio que tá caindo/São as nuvens que tão passando” (“Prédio“); “O nosso amor, uma garrafa de vinho/Virando vinagre devagarinho” (“Peixeiro“).

Cuidado, porém, com o que eles dizem. Essa filosofia de verdade-nas-coisas-simples volta e meia é apenas disfarce para uma visão muito mais irônica e desafiadora do mundo. Veja o caso de “Pouco Importa” e do desfecho de “Um Rei e o Zé”. Ou do discurso sombrio que vem com a brisa litorânea de “Vila do ½ Dia” (“A coisa tá ficando preta/O céu já vai perdendo o azul”). “Peixeiro” alerta: “Fica encucada/Não sabe se eu falo sério ou palhaçada”.

E não é apenas isso que torna o disco da Apanhador Só surpreendente. É verdade que as canções são fruto de longo trabalho de forja e lustre, polidas até atingir aquele ponto de assimilação quase imediata. É também verdade que são executadas e cantadas com primor, e que a assinatura de Marcelo Fruet na produção musical indica capricho. Mas essas mesmas canções sempre carregam um elemento estranho, algo que parece não se encaixar, e que faz com que Apanhador Só mude a cada audição.

Para conseguir esse resultado, contam ainda as colaborações de fora, como o jovem poeta gaúcho Diego Grando, o compositor Ian Ramil, e Estevão Bertoni, vocalista do Bazar Pamplona. A banda também recorre a uma série de objetos normalmente não usados como percussão – entre eles, furadeira, máquina registradora, pato de borracha e a roda de bicicleta, símbolo da Apanhador Só –, que relevam ouvidos atentos aos sons do mundo. Carina Levitan não mais acompanha a banda nos palcos, mas é a principal responsável pelos cacarecos levados ao estúdio.

No fim, é difícil classificar Apanhador Só, que tanto recorre à memória coletiva, como apresenta saídas experimentais impensadas. Alguns podem argumentar que é música pop, mas é apenas meia resposta. O que esses meninos fazem é música popular com espírito aventureiro.

Apanhador Só é Alexandre Kumpinski (voz e guitarra), Felipe Zancanaro (guitarra), Fernão Agra (baixo) e Martin Estevez (bateria).

“Planejei comigo mesmo: assim que tivesse acesso, ouviria o disco inteiro, numa tacada só, antes de abrir a boca. Não consegui. Não passava da primeira música. Malditos venta a fuça lambe-fogo! Botaram ‘Um Rei e o Zé’ atravancando o trânsito. Com aquele solo de metais, uma continuação do assobio falho do Tom Zé em ‘Brigitte Bardot’. Ouvi trocentas vezes antes de continuar em frente. Minha favorita, logo de cara. Só conhecia de shows e ficou linda no álbum. Apanhador Só não é mais aquela banda que eu conheci há uns quatro anos, com as melhores linhas de baixo do rock nacional. Agora eles têm também timbres maravilhosos de guitarra. E o Kumpinski matando a pau nos vocais. Destacaria o hino ‘Maria Augusta’, agora mais dançante, e ‘Jesus, o Padeiro e o Coveiro‘, frenética, em erupção. Já tô rouco de dizer: discaço.”

É assim que vai ser, e eu já enxergo a fila no portão. Propus sociedade ao velho, mas ele me mandou catar coquinhos. Prefere trabalhar na bilheteria. O primeiro disco da Apanhador Só é o parque de diversões da minha solidão.”

O quarteto Jaill é formado por Vincent Kircher, Austin Dutmer, Andrew Harris e Ryan Adams, um grupo de rapazes de Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Juntos, eles tocam e se descrevem como 'psych-pop' com uma coragem inegável.

Vincent Kircher, Austin Dutmer, Andrew Harris and Ryan Adams are a somewhat sneaky, rarely sleazy group of guys from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Together, they are Jaill, a self-described psych-pop combo who play with undeniable guts. Kircher and Dutmer started the band back in 2002 and in early 2009, the band released There’s No Sky (Oh My My), a 12-song LP (at just over 30 minutes) that is irresistibly catchy, moving, dirty, sarcastic, and new. Recorded nervously in the leaky basement of an old funeral home, with overdubs finished over a year’s time at home, There’s No Sky caught the attention of Sub Pop, with stand-out tracks like “Always Wrong” and “Beggar Sincere.” Recalling the glory of 90s lo-fi pop, these songs possess a sinewy tension honed from years of basement shows and a palpable, gritty rock sense born of enduring cold, cold Midwest winter months. Following an Irish immigrant carpenter from coastal Queens to the Catskills and beyond,The Builder is an American existential portrait that explores the gulf between the idea of a thing and the thing itself. Having set off to the New York countryside to construct a reproduction of the earliest of American cape houses, the protagonist (Colm O'Leary) finds himself overcome by an inexplicable fatigue. Debts and expectations mount alongside the crudest and most naive of deceptions, that of both self and of family. As the chasm grows the Builder finds himself confronted by the unnerving ambivalence of the world around him.

A subtle, contemplative rendering reminiscent of the films of John Cassavetes and The Dardenne Brothers, The Builder is the first full-length feature directed by R. Alverson, a carpenter and musician from Richmond, VA. It features music by Bon Iver, Gregor Samsa, Pan American, Robert Donne and Spokane (Alverson and co-producer Courtney Bowles' band, who have released 5 records on Jagjaguwar since 1999). Alverson's second feature, New Jerusalem, starring Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and The Builder's Colm O'Leary, was completed in late winter of 2010.

As a companion to the feature, we will be offering a collection of songs, Music For The Builder, on the Jagjaguwar web site. This "foundtrack" features new, unreleased and demoed songs from artists like Califone, Luke Temple and Sam Amidon. Amidon offers the first in the series with "Cabin in the Corner," a faithful rendition of an Irish traditional that features the brother of The Builder's Colm O'Leary, Eamon, on bozouki and backing vocals. The song's lyrics -- "Don't care for fine mansions in the earth's sinking sand/Lord, build me a cabin in the corner of Glory Land" -- might serve as a jumping off point for the movie itself.

Thus was the simple dare handed to Richard Youngs from his friend Andrew "Paz" Paine during their weekly Sunday meet-up. Ever the modest master, Youngs said in accepting this friendly challenge that he merely endeavored to capture the "beats and hooks" of contemporary pop. He's never attempted to disguise his gift for catchy musical phrases, though they may have come by way of careening, pleading, soothing or challenging multi-tracked voices.

We present the results here as Beyond The Valley Of Ultrahits. Among bright, hypnotic loops, Youngs' voice finds its inner Bowie. But let it be known: this collection of house-inspired gems displays much more than a capacity for pop emulation. It's a confirmation of Youngs' craft and prowess, no matter the terrain.

With enviable grace, experimental minimalist Youngs sets his sights on the pop world and claims it as his own. Youngs' heretofore unknown love of Pet Shop Boys and the Madchester sound is reimagined via his unique avant sensibility and atmospheric wand strokes. Originally released in 2009 as a very-limited CD-R on Paine's Sonic Oyster label, Jagjaguwar is honored to present Beyond the Valley of Ultrahits, remastered and on vinyl for the first time.

O quarteto canadense Women anunciou para setembro seu segundo álbum, o sucessor do belo debut Women foi intitulado Public Strain e será lançado pelo selo canadense Flemish Eye e via Jagjaguwar nos USA, em setembro próximo. A primeira pepita liberada gratuitamente é “Eyesore”, a bela 'trip-song' que fecha Public Strain.

On their debut self-titled album, Women embraced sonic brashness that deeper examination revealed to be tinted with sly pop melody. With "Public Strain" the band honed a sound truthful to that reverb drenched noise while allowing the pop sensibilities to surface into clearer focus.

In fall of 2009, Patrick Flegel (vocals/guitar), Matt Flegel (bass/vocals), Chris Reimer (guitar/vocals), and Michael Wallace (drums) went into the studio with an abundance of ideas, working around conflicting schedules and graveyard shifts. With Chad VanGaalen again on production duties, the band laboriously crafted a timeless sounding recording over the dead of winter in Alberta, Canada. The result exploits their usage of harsh, grating dissonance in smaller and controlled doses, using noise as the foundation for richly structured, layered songwriting.

From the opening strains of "Can't You See" it's clear that the album is far more than just a continuation of their debut. Resting upon Matt Flegel's plodding bass line, Patrick Flegel's deadpan vocal delivery, and Chris Reimer on bowed guitars and cello, this moody, nocturnal ballad opens the album on a dark note – one that is quickly countered by "Heat Distraction", a jigsaw of bright guitar phrases and winding time signatures.

This exact balance of delicate and dense is a pervasive thread throughout the album, reflecting the contradiction of the band's environment buried in urban sprawl framed by prairie landscape. Whether twisting through the urgent krautrock of "Locust Valley", an exercise of harmony through simplicity, or climaxing with the bittersweet melody of "Eyesore", the album somehow builds luminous contrast out of a palette of grays.

In places claustrophobic, conjuring walking dreams of sexual anguish and general decay, elsewhere soaring with vintage guitar tones and vocal melodies or collapsing into swirling, mesmerizing swells, "Public Strain" cycles through insomnia, paranoia, resignation and euphoria, to capture a band with an undeniable voice coming into full awareness of their craft.
