Saint Bartlett opens up with a grandiosity yet unheard on a Damien Jurado album. It strips away the many layers of paint from the house down the street where we know Jurado has occupied for the last decade. The new coat is exhilarating. It makes the whole neighborhood shine. It's a modest grandiosity; still homegrown. The mellotron swells, heavenly handclaps ring in stereo and big drums create a sky for the songs to fly in. And the words. Words spring forth from within the volcano of Jurado, full of hope. There's so much hope, in fact, that album opener "Cloudy Shoes" turns into a call-and-response with himself, as though it were a dialogue between two halves of himself.

"I wish that I could float up from the ground / I will never know what that's like"

Heavy stuff. Richard Swift's Spector-esque production is spot-on. He ferries Jurado across the river, where the metamorphosis occurs. He then ferries him back, and it is through Swift's lens that we see Jurado not as a folk singer, but as a mystic -- somewhere between Van Morrison, Scott Walker and Wayne Coyne. Saint Bartlett was made entirely at Swift's National Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.

Inter-Be is the debut album by PETER WOLF CRIER, the Minneapolis-based duo of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen. The album was born on a single summer night when Pisano felt a torrent of creativity after what had felt, to him, like an interminably long dry spell. He shared the songs with Moen, and over the months that followed, at Moen's home, these rough-hewed tunes became what they are now: a confident collection of songs, but deceptive in that their very guts still reflect the thoughts of a man in transition.

Pisano's is not a new songwriting voice. He is best known for being part of the Wars of 1812, an ascendant Wisconsin-bred quartet. Their first album together, Status Quo Ante Bellum, was more than just an album. It was relocation and aspiration and Pisano's lyrical Eden. As the Wars went on hiatus, Pisano continued to hone his craft, keeping his days full as a teacher at a small private school while fine-tuning, at night, the songs that would soon become Inter-Be. Feeling confident in the songs, Pisano approached Moen, a seasoned drummer and engineer best known for his involvement in Laarks and Amateur Love. After being asked to add some percussive elements, Moen added his thundering drum rolls and perfectly timed fills, but he also added something much more: a melodic soundscape that would complete the evolution of the songs. So was born the partnership that is called Peter Wolf Crier.

Jagjaguwar is no stranger to our near northern neighbors' musical culture. With our ears tuned into labelmates Gayngs, Volcano Choir, and Bon Iver, Peter Wolf Crier fits firmly into our developing Midwestern curatorial. This internationally traveling exposition of the Northern Midwest's best and brightest all starts within a couple hundred miles radius, stretching from Minneapolis to Milwaukee. For the seemingly endless rolling plains and valleys of our local geography, that is right next door.

Pearly Gate Music is an incredibly gifted gentleman by the name of Zach Tillman (although he records and usually plays live with a stylistic variety of full-band options), who makes beautiful, challenging, simple-yet-complicated songs structured around his extraordinary singing, vivid lyrics, and unusual melodic sense. Sometimes conjuring the feeling of a punk rock religious revival in an old-time prairie tent, sometimes stripped down to spare acoustic-guitar-and-lovely-croon, Tillman's music sounds as if it were written and performed by a bedraggled dust bowl poet influenced by whatever popular songs from the poor folk circuit were being sung after dinner in the parlors of his youth — and who somehow managed to supernaturally absorb the sound of Lubbock circa 1955, Laurel Canyon circa 1968 and Berlin circa 1980.

YO LA TENGO have worked with a huge variety of artists from different genres over the years. In 1997 they released the "Autumn Sweaters Remix" EP, featuring remixes from Tortoise, Kevin Shields and µ-Ziq. In 1999, they released the "Danelectro Remixes," with remixes by Kit Clayton and Nobekazu Takemura. During the early 2000s, the band performed with members of legendary free jazz combo Other Dimensions In Music as well as members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. In 2010, the band presents an EP of remixes of "Here To Fall," the lead track from last year's "Popular Songs," by De La Soul, RJD2 and Pete Rock.
"Here To Fall" is the most popular track from "Popular Songs," a couple having a tense conversation about the future over the background of menacing, descending chords and distorted wa-wa guitar. Each of these legendary hip hop performers has taken the track and the story and made it their own. Maseo from De La Soul strips the song to its core only to add driving guitars and a heavy groove. RJD2's take is as cool and atmospheric as you'd expect. It is the EP's closer that truly takes the song to the next level - Pete Rock's remix is dusky, minimal, abstract and hypnotic - carving the song down to the discrete elements of the human relationship, then dropping a verse about Yo La Tengo themselves - in a word, awesome.

On the Ones and Threes is the first Versus LP in ten years, and possibly their best. From the nascent verve of 1993's epochal debut The Stars Are Insane to the more haphazard yet equally great Secret Swingers (1996), on through the glossier pop sheen of Two Cents Plus Tax (1998) and 2000's apparent swansong Hurrah, Versus has consistently astounded. And even though it's been a decade since we've heard from them, they're still one of the best bands out there-gritty yet melodic, serene yet explosive, and balanced on the brink in a way that has become somewhat of a lost art. Emerging from the fertile D.I.Y. rock scene in Dalston, a gentrification-proof London neighborhood with ample “lo-fi” bands and Turkish restaurants, noise-pop trio Male Bonding plays fast. Nothing Hurts, the band’s first full-length, gets it done in half an hour, and most songs clock in at around two minutes. But, there’s much more to Male Bonding than high-speed, high-impact punk. If you will know their velocity, you will remember their melodies. Every song on Nothing Hurts, whether a clipped, snarling rock anthem (“All Things This Way,” “Crooked Scene,” “Pumpkin”) or something more foggy and contemplative (“Franklin,” “Worse to Come”), carries a hook that’s immediate and permanent. Nothing Hurts was recorded in the fall of 2009 in New York and mixed and mastered by Pete Lyman at Infrasonic Sound.

CocoRosie are two American-born sisters, Sierra and Bianca, who started making music together in Paris in 2003. Their first album, La Maison de Mon Rêve, was released in 2004 and their second album, Noah’s Ark, followed in 2005. Their third and, to now, most recent album, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, came out in 2007. All three of these albums were released worldwide on Touch and Go Records and earned positive critical acclaim both overseas and at home.

The nomadic duo (currently and temporarily residing in New Mexico) spent much of 2008 writing and recording in Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Berlin, New York, and Paris, finding amazing and diverse musicians to collaborate along the way. The result is their 11-song Sub Pop debut, Grey Oceans, due out May 11th, 2010.

When Ryan Olson decided to make a record with Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt, it was clear to them what the result would be: a collection of drugged-up keyboards and slick bedroom production almost exclusively inspired by 10cc's "I'm Not In Love." To be fair, they weren't entirely off. What they didn't know was that it would spiral into a project of epic proportions, enlisting the talents of over 25 musicians from various scenes around the country, relocating the base of operations from Olson's Minneapolis bedroom/studio to the Wisconsin-based studio April Base, and the genesis of a musical family, GAYNGS.

From the moment anyone heard Olson, Coulter, and Hurlburt's rough version of their first composition "The Gaudy Side of Town," they wanted in on it. To most of the players involved, this genre of music was quite foreign yet entirely familiar. Olson knew this, and began calling upon an eclectic cast of contributors whom he thought would share his vision, and relish in the idea of exploring uncharted musical territory within them. The first people to join the cause were North Carolina's Megafaun (Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, Phil Cook), and with them came Ivan Howard (The Rosebuds), and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce. By mid-2009 the studio sessions were becoming more and more frequent, bouncing back and forth between April Base and Olson's bedroom. In Minneapolis, Olson brought in Rhymesayers rapper P.O.S and his fellow Doomtree artist Dessa, psych-rockers Jake Luck and Nick Ryan (Leisure Birds), song-birds Channy Moon-Casselle and Katy Morley, jazz-saxophonist Michael Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird), retro-pop duo Maggie Morrison and Grant Cutler (Lookbook), and slide-guitarist Shön Troth (Solid Gold).

Vocally, GAYNGS is a triumph. Zack Coulter (Solid Gold) shines from the jump, floating over the record with his airy, haunting melodies. Fans of Bon Iver will recognize Vernon's familiar falsetto, but will flip when they hear his Bone Thug's-style R&B. Ivan Howard sounds right at home with his sensual and breathy leads, while P.O.S. abandons his genre entirely for a soul inspired tenor. With over a dozen people contributing vocals, its incredible how cohesive the album sounds.

After a year of tracking and mixing, GAYNGS is officially ready to release the album, entitled "Relayted." The initial goal was achieved perfectly, yet "Relayted" sounds refreshing and modern. With each song written at 69 BPM's, and tripped-out transitions from song to song, it is truly an audio experience from start to finish.

Watch for GAYNGS to erupt this coming spring.

RELEASE: O álbum de Messias, nas últimas lojas do ramo, numa loja longe de você. Ou na audiosfera.

Messias (líder do grupo "brincando de deus", de Salvador-Bahia) anuncia o lançamento do seu primeiro trabalho solo. O álbum — se é que ainda podemos chamá-lo assim — está saindo em MP3 e CD; em breve, ganhará versões em vinil e cassete, numa provocação aberta aos formatos. Precedido pelos singles "Resilience" (que atingiu o quarto lugar no Top 10 da revista brasileira Rolling Stone), “The machines are my family” e “God, if you can hear me”, seu trabalho chega a uma versão final com “Escrever-me, Envelhecer-me, Esquecer-me”, um álbum triplo (para os formatos CD, vinil e cassete, e inteiro para download), num total de 32 faixas.

O ÁLBUM

Produtor e autor de todas as músicas, Messias reuniu músicos locais, colaboradores, parceiros da brincando de deus, além de contar com a co-produção de André T. Seu trabalho solo não se contrapõe ao que ele realiza com a brincando de deus, mas introduz novos elementos. As composições (em português e inglês) são formadas a partir de paisagens sonoras e textos pessoais, inaugurando um processo absolutamente particular de método de trabalho: o disco foi gravado no Estúdio T (em Salvador), mas é recheado de sessões realizadas em casa, no carro, em bares da cidade ou via celular. Diverso sem ser eclético, Messias faz uma tentativa pessoal: conferir sofisticação a um coração lo-fi. Assim, guitarras, programação, efeitos e cordas delineiam seu trabalho atual.

Além do seu trabalho solo e à frente da brincando de deus, Messias é doutor em Comunicação e professor da Universidade Federal da Bahia, onde trabalha com música e cultura digital. Mas é a dimensão estética de sua música que conferiu a Messias o reconhecimento por suas melodias e textos apurados. Em sua estreia solo, Messias demonstra rigor com o que faz: o disco é um trabalho singular de produção musical, projeto gráfico e convergência de som-texto-imagem.

SHOWS DE LANÇAMENTO

Messias toca em São Paulo (Studio SP, 19.05.10) e Belo Horizonte (A Obra, 20.05.10). O lançamento do disco em Salvador está previsto para 22 de maio, na Igreja da Barroquinha.

A COMUNIDADE

Messias foi um dos pioneiros na exploração dos recursos digitais para divulgação de sua música. Ele também criou a lendária lista de discussão “Indie-Brasil”, que integrou centenas de músicos e produtores independentes da cena brasileira. Para reunir os interessados em sua música, Messias montou uma comunidade, uma espécie de rede social própria. Textos, fotos, blogs e músicas já estão disponíveis.
