O God Help The Girl, projeto capetaneado por Stuart Murdoch, do Belle & Sebastian, está lançando hoje, via Rough Trade, seu terceiro single, “Baby You're Blind” (capa acima), linda canção que não faz parte do disco homômino, lançado no ano passado mas, em seu lado "b" traz uma nova versão para “A Down and Dusky Blonde”, cuja primeira versão, faz parte do homômino álbum. Os vocais de “Baby You're Blind” são de Linnea Jönsson, da banda sueca Those Dancing Days.
Small Black, banda do Brooklyn, NY, USA, formada pelos amigos Josh, Ryan, Juan e Jeff, que fazem um indie pop com referências synth e noyse, estão lançando seu primeiro EP, Small Black, que inicia com “Despicable Dogs”, que foi disponibilizada gratuitamente em áudio e vídeo.
The winter of 2008/2009 found old friends Ryan Heyner and Josh Kolenik holed up in the attic of Uncle Matt's Long Island home. Those cold weekend days saw Small Black drinking Crystal Light, watching Waterworld, and plugging away on their casios and samplers, while Kolenik's uncle shaped surfboards in the basement.
After months of thawing out, the band emerged with one of 2009's catchiest debut releases. The Small Black EP, as it is called, melds strange beats, dreamy synths, tape hiss and laid-back melodies into pop jams. Teaming up with longtime collaborators Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin, the band then fleshed out their bedroom sound, combining both live and sampled drums, live bass, keyboards and samplers for their live performance.
Described by Pitchfork as "absurdly addictive" and "soul-stirring," the band self released the EP via their own imprint CassClub in October 2009, along with a documentary-style music video for "Despicable Dogs," featuring Uncle Matt. They quickly followed it up with a UK single for "Despicable Dogs" (on Transparent) and a split 7-inch with like-minded artist Washed Out (on Lovepump United). Now 2010 sees Small Black teaming up with Jagjaguwar for a deluxe re-mastered release of their debut EP with two extra songs added, "Kings Of Animals" and "Baby Bird Pt. 2."

Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of Oneida, People of the North is an ongoing but sporadic outgrowth of that restlessly experimental Brooklyn assemblage. Since the first tour in early 2003, POTn has served as another language emanating from the screaming mouth of the O. It has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of Oneida as well. The entirety of Oneida has performed together under the POTn label at venues including the Frying Pan and the Mercury Lounge.
People of the North has provided compositions that have worked their way into Oneida's most cherished repertoire, including "Up with People" (from Happy New Year) and "Lavender" (from The Wedding).
While there are no clearly defined boundaries separating POTn from Oneida, it might be fair to say that the music tends to be more staunchly devoted to minimalism, repetition, improvisation, and sternness than the wide-ranging efforts of the big brother band.
Deep Tissue was recorded at the Ocropolis in early 2009, with the participation of much of the O. The sessions were deep, and the skies were gray.
There is no specific or overt "influence" that particularly defines the music on Deep Tissue, but there's kind of a 70's Germany/80's Chicago/90's Japan/00's Iran thing with People of the North, so maybe that's there?
Some additional helpful reference points (beyond Oneida) could include Bo Hansson, Larry Young, Suicide, Silver Apples, Cluster, Wipers, The Heads, but it's probably cooler if you listen and come up with your own touchstones, since who knows if you can hear any of this – at the end of it all, it's just a list of sweet music.
The last thought – Showtime (member of the O, who plays on all of Deep Tissue) described Tehran to me once as "the smell of flowers and diesel exhaust" – and that seems like an excellent description of this album, although Deep Tissue is probably colder than Tehran.

Avi Buffalo is the adopted name of Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg, an 18 year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Long Beach, CA. Avi Buffalo is also the name of the band he formed with friends and like-minded collaborators Sheridan Riley (drums), Arin Fazio (bass) and Rebecca Coleman (keyboards and vocals). It (Avi Buffalo) is also the name of his/their debut full-length album, which we are just ridiculously puffed-up about releasing on April 27, 2010.
Note! The version of “What’s In It For?” to be found on the album is the same as the one found on the “What’s In It For?” 7" single that we released back in December. The version of “Jessica” on the album is altogether different from the version that is the b-side of that same single.

RELEASE: Preocupado em divulgar a nova e prolífera geração da música contemporânea brasileira, o cantor e agitador cultural Daniel Barra, resolveu criar um projeto onde reúne esses artistas e cria novas canções.
O projeto Geração acredita que a união faz a força, e que juntos podem fazer mais barulho do que sozinhos. Para tanto, Barra reuniu artistas radicados em São Paulo, ainda inéditos em disco solo, criando assim a primeira versão da Geração SP.
Bárbara Eugênia, Berlam, Caio Bosco, Claudia Dorei, Dani Barra, Gil Duarte, Mc Thg, Luciana Paes, Luísa Maita, Roberta Estrela D´Alva, Su Bragatto e Tulipa Ruiz são nomes já atuantes da cena independente ou artistas híbridos descobertos no teatro.
O disco Geração SP será lançado dia 27 de abril, com uma primeira edição gratuita no formato Revista SMD. Nele, 14 canções repletas de parcerias, envolvidas por uma atmosfera teatral, foram feitas com exclusividade entre os 12 artistas e músicos convidados.
O projeto deu tão certo que ganhou o “Prêmio Estímulo de Música” da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura para gravar o CD, e acabou caindo na graça de um dos principais selos da atual ceara brasileira, o YB Music.
O futuro da Geração é realizar o mesmo projeto com artistas de outros estados do país. Lembrando que no final de 2007, em sua proposta original, mais de 40 nomes entre cantores, compositores e instrumentistas radicados em São Paulo, foram convidados. Anni Rossi está para lançar um novo álbum neste próximo verão do hemisfério norte. Mas já está soltando a primeira canção, Crushing Limbs.
Sobre a criação da canção, Anni explica: "Comecei a usar sintetizadores analógicos ao lado da viola, quando fiz a demo da canção. Isso despertou meu interesse em fazer canções pop que, inicialmente, soam alegres e brilhantes, mas quando se ouve atentamente há uma escuridão nas letras e os sons que se revelam quando se começa a conhecer melhor a música."
Tracey Thorn, que ao lado de Ben Watt forma o Everything But The Girl, grande sucesso nos anos 80s e 90s, durante este longo recesso da dupla, e também de um tempo para formar sua família, enveredou por uma bela carreira solo, já lançando seu segundo álbum, depois do tempo em que priorizou sua vida particular, Love and Its Opposite ratifica, mais uma vez, o talento de uma das mais belas vozes femininas do pop. Como se isso já não basta-se, Tracey ainda é generosa e já liberou duas das dez pérolas do álbum: Oh, The Divorces! e Why Does the Wind?.
After pausing an 18-year career with partner Ben Watt in best-selling alt-pop duo Everything But The Girl (1982-2000), followed by a self-imposed hiatus to start a family, Tracey Thorn re-emerged in 2007 to a wave of critical acclaim with the glittering autobiographical folk-disco of Out of the Woods, her first solo album since 1982's indie classic A Distant Shore. Now she is back with another: the starkly beautiful Love and Its Opposite on Merge Records.
Partnering again with Berlin-based producer Ewan Pearson (who worked on much of Out of the Woods and more recently with Delphic), Tracey has created an album that is striking in its simplicity. Recorded in Berlin and London, and featuring guest contributions from Hot Chip's Al Doyle, The Invisible's Leo Taylor, Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman, Nashville songwriter-drummer Cortney Tidwell, and Lost Valentinos' guitarist Jono Ma, Love and Its Opposite is steeped in a compassionate directness. The tight, often undecorated arrangements for guitar, piano, bass, and drums (and a smattering of strings and woodwinds) serve ten songs over a compact thirty-nine minutes that confront the full unvarnished weight of complex relationships in flux.

It is far from hyperbolic to enthusiastically assert that this album—Blunt Mechanic's first—is Ben Barnett's finest work to date. Considering the critically-acclaimed and cultishly-followed body of work he has amassed over the past 15 years recording as Kind of Like Spitting, one could be forgiven for dismissing that claim before having heard the onslaught of impeccably constructed songs, unstoppable, charming guitar hooks, heart-wrenching, moving, uplifting storytelling, brilliant turns of phrase and vocal/instrumental interplay that collectively define world record. After more than a decade of musical exploration and a hiatus during which he dealt with and largely overcame some pretty serious hard knocks, Barnett started recording again on his cassette 8-track, in his spare time with a fresh and heretofore-uncharacteristic joyful perspective, and made an album that is the culmination of his creative and emotional life. He gave copies of the vivid, powerful lo-fi results (from stoney, sludgy grooves to plaintive acoustic expressions of gratitude) to friends. Friends smiled; Barnett smiled, we were happy to be among the friends he shared the songs with; copious hi-fives were smacked.

Collaborating with outside producers for the first time, Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack's four new songs feel loose and direct, from the tumbling opener 'My Neighbor' to the propulsive 'Emmylou.' 'My Creator' and 'I Hope You Die' begin like ballads but soon reveal unexpected layers of saxophone and percussion over Wasner's cascading vocals. Chris and Mickey Freeland, brothers with ties to everything from Oxes' math-rock explorations to Baltimore's indie hip-hop scene, helmed the new EP's recordings in their own Beat Babies studio, and they bring new textures to Wye Oak's ever-expanding sound. O Blur lançou neste sábado (17/4) passado, “Fool’s Day”, sua primeira música em sete anos, "Fool's Day", single comemorativo ao Record Store Day. A faixa foi lançada em edição limitada de mil cópias e somente em compacto de vinil de sete polegadas e só foi distribuído em lojas independentes de música no Reino Unido. Philadelphia singer-songwriter KURT VILE returns with a stepping-stone 7-song EP between Matador's reissue of his privately circulated "Childish Prodigy" album last fall and his upcoming new album recorded with John Agnello. "Square Shells" depicts some aspects of Kurt's music not immediately accessible on his last album, from dreamgazey jams to plaintive, folky melodies. Recorded in a brighter, less homemade sound, Kurt's extraordinarily evocative songwriting explores themes of friendship, loss and desolation. As the title suggests, 'Square Shells' is also something of a collection of curios. Opening track "Ocean City" instantly grasps you with its charming, sunny melody - completely undercut by its loner lyrical vibe. If past Kurt Vile records channeled private-pressing downerfolk via early Pavement and Cass McCombs, this song layers Leo Kottke on Van Dyke Parks. Subsequent tracks move past the acoustic sound into beautiful layers of guitar and vocals. A perfect holdover for Kurt fans to bridge them to the upcoming proper full-length in fall 2010.
